most successful 200metres breaststroke swimmers being one of an
elite group of 7 individuals to have held the world record over
the last 33 years.
“After my Olympic achievement in 1988 I planned on success
at the 1989 European Championships. At the end of the 1988 season
I analysed my training and compared my results to my competitors
and came up with a plan. This plan was a series of steps with discrete
targets to allow me to achieve my goal and a world record was needed.
What may surprise you is my goal was not to “win” but
to reach my defined target.
